Spring/Summer 2012 new shoes! Sandals, to be specific.
Yesterday, in Hki, I browsed through a magazine featuring the coming season´s new shoes, and was shocked, when I reached the sandals section!
Just take a look at these catwalk picture sandals, worn by the slim models!
IMO, just horrible.
Having no intention of buying the magazine ( 1. ), over 70€´s, I snatched randomly a few pictures ( 2., 3., 4. ).
These pictures show the average sandals in the magazine.
Ouch, ouch. Young women with already bad feet, wearing shoes way too small for their feet.
Looking at the pictures, is definitely not encouraging me to buy sandals.
Last year, I decluttered my shoes. For one simple reason. They were all too small for me.
Perhaps, due to my age, I have gone up 1/2 size; perhaps, when buying the shoes - in my vanity - I have wanted to buy a size, that " looked smaller and thus better ", but which at home, and finally, walking on the streets of Helsinki, started to hurt my feet, to the point, that walking was impossible.
So, I sold all my previous shoes. There was absolutely no sense to keep something, I was not able to wear.
Yesterday, we had -23°C in the evening, when I came home.
I wore my laced up Tod´s boots, which are one number up my " now " normal size. My feet were not cold at all, as the shoes were generous in size, and I was able to move my toes easily around inside them. What a lovely feeling!
When my feet stay warm, I stay warm.
Looking at the feet of the models above, I feel sad. Sad for their feet. What will the future of these feet feel like?
Do you instantly manage to buy shoes, which fit your feet perfectly? Do you know your correct size?
What about the pointy end shoes and boots, how on earth are they wearable ( not forgetting the skyscrapers )? Do you like sandals?
Please share your comments, experiences and views about shoes. Thank you : )!

Wow, I can't believe those pictures are advertisements! I wouldn't feel like buying them either!
I am a little picky when it comes to shoes: they have to be totally comfortable, I don't compromise comfort over looks. I do know my correct size: I'm 36 european size, 6 1/2 american size. As for pointy shoes, I don't like them so I can't answer your question :)
I used to wear VERY high heels and platforms (pre-babies) but all my shoes were always comfortable, with good quality heels that supported the foot properly (I can't wear needle heels, for example).
As for sandals, I love them, especially the ones with chinese heel (is it called like that in English?)
Marcela, think - these are feet of young women, under 20 perhaps. How will they be able to walk in their 50-60´s?
I think that the pointy shoes look hilarious- on anyone.
Maybe the word would be wedges ( the Chinese heel )?
The feet are slipping forward..the toes will be on the ground ouch!!Cheap and tacky to my mind.
Still I have to admit to my youth madness...from Mary Quant's boots to high wedge sandels, round, square, pointed toes I have tried the lot in my London days( had to throw off the yoke of Sloanedom) wonder I have such good feet still!!
Like the heel on the boot of the first picture what is that design called?
I take UK size 6 1/2 or 7 depending on make of shoes, Chanel & French Sole are on the small size.Would never buy shoes on the web.
-5 last night,-4 now still the sun is warm, not as cold as Finland.
Keep warm. Ida
Good grief! I'm amazed that anyone would advertise with pictures like that.
I no longer buy sandals or high heels. Aging has brought me some foot problems along with occasional balance problems caused by an inner ear disturbance. Finding attractive and fashionable shoes is difficult. I haven't quite succumed to the horrible orthopedic looking shoes many women my age wear tho.
Darla
Somewhere in books about fashion and style I found advice about buying shoes and clothes half size bigger. For "i feel bloated" days, for "running around a lot" days, etc. So I started to follow that advice, and for the last couple of years my shoes grew for half size up. I feel much better in them!
I'm laughing from those photos. I thought before I read your post, that they were going to be from a magazine article on "How Not to Wear Your Sandals!"
So hideous, with their toes over the edge on the ground. Yuck.
I've never been a huge fan of high heeled sandals, especially after a certain age. I find them a bit cheap or tacky. Not elegant.
And yes, my feet have also grown - a lot!
Wanted to add that I don't like pointy toe shoes either. I like an "almond" shaped toe for the most part.
Very unattractive and unhealthy for the poor models. It even makes me sad on another level, the young models are not being personally considered when they put shoes on them. Get them some shoes that fit.
Comfort and appearance have equal weight when I choose shoes.
I am wearing my boots too and feeling very warm and snug.
Those images are awful...the model's feet look very odd in those sandals. I'd be embarrassed to be seen in ill fitting shoes.
My shoes are mostly ballet flats with a few pairs of kitten heels for dressier occasions and several pairs of serious "walking shoes" for my fitness regime.
Ida, I´m sorry, I have no idea about the name of the heel on the cover of the magazine.
So, you have a dashing past ; )..
I have bought my Tod´s online, as I have tried them in person over here, and rely on the sizing. Other brands remain a mystery, but at least you can return them back, if they don´t fit. Not so interested about the waiting and returning though.
Buying clothes online - not my thing.
Darla, I agree. And this magazine definitely is advertising shoes!
Sandals are totally off for me, as I hate the sand slipping in, and I hate having dirty feet.
Piece de jour, Hi!, I have not heard the shoe rule, but I have heard, that if you have two sizes to choose ( clothing ) from, buy the larger one.
From now on, I´ll buy the 1/2 size larger, when buying shoes.
Kathy, agreed. Sandals with heels for those, who have very pretty feet ( this excludes me ).
Don´t the pointy toe shoes hurt the feet? Almond is a classic model : ).
Patricia, perhaps a young person does not feel the pain as we do?
Comfort and appearance, yes, definitely.
Decades ago, Bruno Magli was my favorite brand. The shoes fit like gloves. Whatever happened to the brand? Today I see only " old women style " shoes from the brand.
Leslie, if young women look awful in those shoes, I would certainly not want to see older women wear them.
I´ve heard, that it is healthy ( for the feet ) to wear different types of shoes, also heels, and naturally to walk barefoot on daily basis.
I´ll skip the barefoot thing now ( -22°C ).
Oh, this is one of my favourite topics of all time! Shoes that fit right are close to the most important thing about getting dressed for me. When I was in my 20s I just assumed that if a shoe fits, it's okay. Well, it needs to fit RIGHT, or otherwise one gets into trouble. I have become very picky about what types of shoes I wear, and if it doesn't fit perfectly, it has to go.
The reason why I feel so passionately about this is that I almost destroyed my feet when I worked as a model. The sample sizes models are given to wear are often too small, just like the pictures show. I, too, have had to wear shoes at work that were way, way too small for me, day in and day out. And the damage is done quickly. When you are young (many models are just children, really) you just assume that it will be okay and that there aren't any long-term consequences, but the sad reality is that the grown-ups who dress you for fashion shows and shoots don't give a damn about your health. When you are young you don't dare to question things or complain. And a lot of the damange is irreversible. I have some issues with my feet that are bad enough that I might need surgery at some point later in life, and I have a very hard time forgiving the modeling industry for that. And it makes me so, so, so angry when I see young women buying shoes that are too small. I'd give anything to go back in time to change things for myself and my own feet.
Thank you for writing about this important topic, and sorry about the long comment!
Wow...I cannot believe they printed those photos...they would not inspire me to buy sandals either.
I do not buy shoes or find the perfect size readily in part because different makes are slightly different...it is usually difficult, really!
I love sandals, especially on beautiful well groomed feet. I even love high heels though I do not have one myself. I even love pointy shoes, sometimes they look so sexy with the exception of the super long pointy ones that extend one's feet way out there.
It is weird but I love sandals and boots better than everyday shoes.
-23...ouch...we are approaching spring very fast here. xx
One point in favour of pointy toes they elongate the legs for those of us whose legs are not model length..L K Bennett'e points are a dream comfort to wear no squashed toes.
I no longer have any but many women still wear them, maybe a UK thing? Ida
How ridiculous those feet look hanging over the edge of the sandals! This is like wearing long pants that drag on the ground - sloppy.
I've never worried about my shoe size - usually a 6 1/2, but sometimes one size up or down depending on the brand. I always try on my shoes first for comfort and proper fit; I wouldn't buy shoes on line for this reason.
And to reply to Waves, thank you for pointing this out, I'd never thought of models suffering from having to wear the wrong size shoes. Awful, especially if the damage is long term.
Those photos are awful. I can't bear to wear shoes that don't fit.
The Waves, thank you for You, for writing the long comment! You definitely have competence to express an opinion.
So, it is as I had thought.. So bad, so sad for the young girls, who naturally can´t refuse the shoes, costumes " ordered " to wear.
And further on - those, seeing these models, thinking that this is the style now, naturally buy the ill- fitting shoes in small sizes, as larger ones are hard to get. In general, the younger generation, at least in northern Europe, have larger feet, than their parents.
The truth is, that the older we turn, the more important it is, to be able to walk with ease in good shoes, without fear of falling.
MrsLJ, btw, the DvN sandals give no support to the ankle either.. ouch- wearing high heels, the shoes need to be sturdy enough, so you won´t twist your ankles or worse.
Maybe , if I lived in your warm state, I might feel differently about sandals: )x
Ida, you have a point about pointy shoes in your comment. I have never heard of the brand you mentioned. Yes, probably a UK thing ; )!
Northmoon, crazy, yes. But as a small comfort to everyone, I can add that 98% of the shoes I saw in that magazine, looked ridiculous too.
I don´t understand the platform craze either..
Susan T, I admit, that I hated placing these pictures on my blog, as they are so ugly. Actually there were more of the same kind, but I chose the " less awful " ones, ugh.
I agree, pointy shoes look funny, witch-like to me hihihi
Those photos are unbelievable! At first I thought they were some sort of joke. If one is advertising the footwear, would they not put a beautiful foot in the sandals and have them at least fit properly? The feet are so dreadful, I am speechless. I am for comfort all the way, but I like my shoes to be pretty too so I am fairly choosy when it comes to shoes and boots. Most of my sandals have no heels or very low heels. And my feet grew after my two pregnancies. I used to be a 36.5 and now I am a 37.
I totally agree with you about the pictured sandals. None of these shoes give proper support to the foot and therefore the foot slides over the front of the toe. I simply don't/won't wear shoes like this...I agree that as we age, comfort sometimes becomes more important than looks.
Those photos are horrible. I'm super picky about shoe comfort, and always have been. If someone wants me sexy they are going to have to find something else to like.
Do they really expect photos like this to sell shoes?
I have to try shoes on before I buy them though my size is usually a US 7M.
Yes, I like sandals...living in Southern California :) I also like pointy-toed shoes providing they fit correctly. I love to look at really high heels but, sadly, have never been able to wear them.
Marcela, agreed!
Jacqueline, unfortunately not a joke. I wonder would these shoes would appeal to us, if shown as such?
Lisa, I´d expect these pictures would turn thoughts about sex far away ; )!
J.W., these are supposed to be " hot " ; )!
Sigh, California .. sandals ok, but seldom over here. Not worth investigating in a pair, if it gets worn once or twice a year (;
how can you be thinking of sandals - we have icy winds and snow forecast - fur boots please!
I will never be able to pointy shoes with Uk size 8 feet - they make my feet too long to fit on the steps of my stairs!!
Thecurateswife, same weather over here, only much colder ; ).
I had not even thought of how to walk the stairs with the pointy shoes, hahaa..
I see similar photos all the time and I'm appalled no one in the industry or consumers or anyone raises an alarm.
I'm surprised women go on buying these shoes after seeing these pictures.
I'm super picky about shoes too; my feet are small and I've been often told how lucky I am for having Cinderella feet...a comment like that always irritates me!
The only good thing about having small feet is shopping for shoes in the children's department, because the quality is the same only the shoes cost less.
Ana, true, and as long as we buy the shoes ( or whatever ), nothing changes.
I love your post. I have always looked closely at the feet in magazine shots and often been amused by the obviously too small or too large shoes. I have small feet (36) and my theory is that those of us with shorter feet cannot possibly deal with the same height in heels as those with longer feet. There just isn't enough foot at the base and heel if our feet are trying to balance on our toes. I also often find that even if the base of a sandal fits perfectly then the straps are often too lose and my feet slide around. Hard to find snug fitting sandals that don't allow my toes to excape or feet to slide. With boots I buy half a size larger to fit thicker tights or socks.
