DIVERSE / Thoughts about jeans

Entering the spring season and " inspired " by my yesterday´s magazine and my lately bought jeans, I decided to write a small post about the fantastic, everyday, every place, always in style - jeans.

The first picture shows a pair of " new " jeans, sold online for 245 pounds! This is a model, you can create yourself. Just cut short a pair of your favorite jeans, and off you go!!

The Elle magazine below, shows different types of jeans, and tells how, where and which ones to choose for yourself.

So briefly ( as if you did not already know ):

Top left - classic skinny jeans. These jeans reveal everything!
Skinny jeans make your legs " seem " longer. Wear them with pumps, or at least with shoes with heels. If the skinny jeans are too short, they " shorten " your legs.
A loose top fits with skinnies, or if you have a waist, you wish to show off, tuck the hem of the top/ shirt under the waistline.
Skinny jeans can be worn from dawn till dusk just about everywhere, just by changing tops and shoes.

Low left - loose jeans; sailor jeans. Best on skinny and tall women. This model should definitely have enough length and is meant to be worn with heels too. A tight top balances the loose pants. Add a shirt, jacket and skinny belt, and this is a casual work outfit.

Top right - low, wide jeans. These jeans create an illusion of long legs, but only, if they are of just the perfect length. The top with this type of jeans could be somewhat loose, maybe also one with some exciting color.

Low right - boyfriend jeans. This model flatters both the skinny and/or curvy woman. If your legs are short, these jeans might make your legs seem even shorter. A weathered wash looks best on the boyfriend jeans, which can be worn with heels or flats. Try to avoid too loose tops. Boyfriend jeans look great when cuffed ( just remember, that cuffing shortens your legs ).

The magazine recommends to buy a smaller size than you normally would, as jeans tend to stretch. It is also recommended to wash the jeans only when they are dirty. This lengthens their wearability.
And last but not least, choose the model, which feels best on.

With this advice, provided by the Finnish Elle magazine, I leave you to decide what type of jeans you will buy ( or not ) for the next season, and wish you a peaceful weekend : )/m

Gee... 245 pounds for what, in the 70s, we used to call "cut-offs."

I do need a new pair of jeans, but 'cut-offs' are not what I'm looking for. :)

Have a good weekend!

The cutoffs in the top picture need a peasant blouse, long straight hair, and a guitar. But one would have to sell their Volkswagen Beetle to afford them ;)

Have a good weekend.

Patricia: Let's not forget to sew a few embroidered patches on the cutoffs.

Teee heee Patricia & JW don't forget the flower in her hair! Ida

I prefer skinny jeans topped with a tunic-length top. Add boots, large designer handbag, flowing scarf and red lipstick. Ready I am to take on the world!

Good points, JW and Ida ;)

Maybe that is why I no longer wear them..dislike the flapping hems of the type I am told is what suits me.
I want to be a wearer of skinny jeans!!

You need height to carry them off..am only 5ft 7". A very interesting post and look forward to other comments on this subject.

Patricia just a thought maybe I was thinking hot pants not cut offs!

Have a great weekend Mette. Ida

I own one pair of jeans and I rarely wear them. When I do tho I've been told they make me appear more "youthful" for what its worth. I've never found a truly comfortable pair of jeans - they seem to pinch in one spot or sag in another and feel stiff all over.

I'm on the lookout for a new style of jeans. This was helpful. I like a medium wash, I just can't get used to the very dark rinse that now seems to be the fashion, although I do see more medium and light rinses again.
I'd like to find a "skinny" but not so tight that they're like leggings!
@Susan - Very curious what brand you bought?

Susan Tiner kirjoitti...

Kathy, they are David Kahn jeans. I accidentally stumbled upon a local designer's boutique in San Francisco -- Margaret O'Leary. From what I understand she started in SF but now has multiple boutiques on the West Coast. I was referred there by a sales clerk at another local designer's boutique -- Babette. I wanted a cardigan but Babette didn't have any I liked so the clerk suggested Margaret O'Leary. I didn't intend to buy jeans! I tried on several tops and cardis and was content, then the store manager suggested trying on these jeans and I love them. I'll try to take a photo later and put it on facebook so you can see.

I read Mette's post just in time I think as I was going to shorten the hem but decided not to. I see the point about the longer length making my legs look longer. I must stop buying petite cut jeans, they're really too short.

Thank you for this great post Mette, I learned a lot!

Thanks Susan,
I love Margaret O'Leary. I have several of her sweaters. There's on shop right near me and I forgot they have jeans. Would love to see them on you.

I have yet to buy a pair of designer jeans though I am curious about them.

Boot cut, skinny and wide leg styles make up my basic jeans.
I love wearing jeans!
Your post is a great one mette, you always have something thought provoking and worthy when you post.

BTW I just received a Marimekko card from a friend and I see it is from Helsinki :)

My bug-a-boo about jeans is the weight of the material. I could be a carpenter and carry a tool belt and roof a house in the weight of the material they use for jeans. Why? I dared to ask a clerk why they had to be so thick and her reply, "so your panty line won't show". And the Ultra Low Rise makes me crazy. I found some I love Silence & Noise at Urban Outfitters. Fit like a glove, thin material, no panty line shows, and guess what? They have been discontinued.

Susan T, great, and great that you let them be.

MrsLJ, the choice is your´s, always!

J.W., take the following approach: Cut your old jeans = save the 245 pounds.
You will now have the money saved to buy a good pair of jeans. In the end, you have two super trendy jeans ; ).

Patricia, the new VW Beetle ( basic ) costs over 20.000 €´s here!

Sanda, a great outfit for you : ). Liking big bags myself too.

Ida, who told you to wear flapping hems? You are not a dwarf my god, skinnies come in different widths.

Darla, maybe you should try on many different brands and models. There are really comfortable jeans around, actually there are too many to choose from! To make the buying easier, decide, how much you are willing to pay for a pair - only don´t be too strict about it ; ).

Kathy, Levi´s has a new " vintage high- rise skinny jeans ", color is perfect : ).

Terri, I am so suspicious, that I usually rely on known brands.
Two years ago I bought a pair of boyfriend jeans, unknown brand, on sale - and I have worn them ever since, nearly daily. Life is full of surprises!!

Leslie, thank you for your compliment : ).
You are s o lucky, if you are able to wear all types of jeans!!
Do you have a friend ( other than me ) in Finland?

Angele, there are differences in the fabrics. Over here, thicker ones are fine for winter, but the 7´s are very light, imo.
Since you have found a model you like, stick to it.
Can´t imagine wearing the very low waist models either, ugh.

Patricia kirjoitti...

Mette you bring up an interesting point. Pants used to be strictly straight or flared, never both styles together. Now look at all the choices that are in style at the same time. I wonder why the change?

Ida, I have one pair of skinny jeans, and I am near to being a dwarf :). Sometimes they can work in those who don't think they can, depending on the top and shoes. I wear navy flats that don't break the line and either a longer top, or a fitted sweater in a similar color to the jeans. I have seen them worn well with tunics.

(Mette&Ida, hope you don't mind my chiming in).

I think buying a regular pair of jenas and scissors is much cheaper ;-)

I don't do skinny jeans, I prefer boot cut style, I find it to be universally flattering. Though a pair of straight leg is more practical for outdoor activity. I usually have straight cut jeans as leisure wear.

Should have explained myself better ..by 'flapping hems' meant bootcut!agree they are ok but no longer what I want. Skinny jeans can make bottoms look very large!! as I noted when in town yesterday yuck! Men and women jeans,jeans...

One stunning woman wore a black trouser suit, white silk tee, pearl studs way to go.

Patricia like it when we all share/suggest ideas (as long as Mette does not mind). Like your idea of jeans, flats & top similar colours as that lengths the body, a look which I like/use often. Thank you for the suggestions.

Trust Sunday is going well, warm sunny day here almost like Spring!!
Have you still snow Mette? Ida

Patricia, maybe we have finally made it clear, that we want to buy certain types of clothes, no matter what the fad, trend may be?
I think that you can create a beautiful outfit with skinny jeans by choosing a matching colored top and blue shoes ( hopefully with a bit of heel ). Surely this will make you look really sleek, slender and give length to your legs - if that´s what you wish! Layering it all with blue something ( could be a different hue of blue ) = perfect.
A reminder: I am not a fashion expert at all, but would suggest not wearing visible belts, if you are shortish!
I love it when you women " talk " to one another on my blog : )!!!

Ana, we have the scissors ; ).
Ok, bootcut, or straight for you : ).

Ida, but-if you wear a top a bit longer, the rear is hidden, hahaa.
I don´t mind you " girls " writing comments to one another AT ALL.
I´m sure, that the woman you saw and wrote about, looked great, but most of us seldom get to dress up so nicely, as our life ( at least mine ) is quite ordinary country life (;

metscan kirjoitti...

Ida, oh I forgot- lots of snow, up to my waist on the path to the stable.
Hah, and more snow is promised for next week!!!

J.W. kirjoitti...

Mette: There is a "snowball's chance in hell" that I will be wearing cut-offs at this time in my life...no matter how trendy they may be ;)

Too much snow! My thoughts are with you!
