This is the scene I meet every morning entering the stable ( 1. ).
The horses have had their morning oats and hay and are waiting in their stable rugs to be let outside.
It is a -8°C morning, and I decide to double rug the three of them, as they are staying out all day.
One by one, each horse gets his own rug on.
Hampel ( 2. ) has had his winter rug since the late 1990´s, and the Rambo rug has really served well through the many winters.
It was only natural, that Miss M´s horse got a Rambo of his own ( 3. ).
Our guest horse, Mr. B ( 4. ), has a different kind of rug. At times I get frustrated, because the rug is much more complicated to throw on, as it has small buckles here and there.
Morty ( 4. ) has a rug of his own. So small and simple.
Finally, all the boys are out.
I can start my daily exercise. Luckily, it is Saturday tomorrow, and my husband takes over at the stable ; ).
Wishing you all a nice weekend!/m

I'm sure your horses are glad for those warm rugs! We had one horse who used to like to roll in manure with his rug on. :-p Guess he was trying to mark it as his own? Morty is so cute in his overcoat!
Such beautiful horses, and I love them in their rugs. Would be curious to see what rug you're wearing in that freezing temperature! When do you ride?
so sweet, they look positively adorable :-)
I love these pictures Mette :)
I have had a Rambo rug before and think they are such good quality. The rugs with neck covers do take more time to put on with all the straps involved. Morty's looks just perfect for him.
We have had rain this week so there is mud everywhere. The rugs have all been washed but are covered again with dirt once the horses are put out. I suppose that is the one advantage of having snow... clean rugs :)
Three horses will take time to look after each morning. I hope you enjoy your Saturday off from stable duties. x
They do look adorable and starting a morning with loving animals is the best way to start a morning in my opinion...and they are so chic too. XX
Mette, your stable looks so clean and tidy and the horses look warm in their rugs, happy that you are about to let them outside.
Morty looks adorable wearing his own little rug.
Have a good weekend!
Look at Morty!
How does your hay come - in rectangular or cylindrical bales?
How beautifully rugged up they all are, and how bright and alert they look. A jolly animal family like this to see to must really help getting up in the dark cold mornings - do they like to have the radio on? I hope spring comes early for you all this year, humans and animals! xxx
They look so patient, but how happy they must be to see you in the morning.
Such a handsome coat on Morty and so securely fastened. Do your animals all cooperate with being rugged? My little dog sees the coat coming towards her as an invitation to dance around.
Dear Mette,
Finding the right rug is so important. We like our horses to look smart, but comfort and ease of use rank high (rubbed shoulders are not part of the equation we seek).
How confident and happy the owner of your boarder must be to have you taking such dedicated care.
Lucky owner, lucky horse.
Do have a nice weekend,
M.
They all look quite content, it is obvious you take good care of them. I didn't know you had a boarder.
Stay warm!
Darla
Wonderful to see happy well looked after horses.
May I ask what brand of coat you have for Monty? I'd like to find one that covers the belly and chest for my dog. The one I have just covers the back - not enough when it's really cold.
Susan, I hope they are glad, anyways, they are in no hurry to come inside in the evening, which can be interpreted, that at least they are not cold.
It is not usual for horses to roll in manure, unless there is no other place to roll over. This surely was not the case at your place.
Kathy, the long thick fur -also on the face- hides their features. You´d have to see them in the summer, when they look like " real horses ".
I wear my stable clothes- riding pants, Aigle winter boots, gloves, fleece scarf and a jacket. All clothes are easy to wash, when needed.
I don´t ride when temperatures sink low below zero temperature.
Ana, getting all the guys out, takes half an hour, so they better look sweet; ).
Abby, true, snow keeps both horses and rugs clean.
But these guys have rugs for mild weather, rain, summer rugs, rugs to be worn before riding, after riding, after washing, etc, etc.. The guest horse must have some 10 different rugs, so you can imagine the frustration, selecting just the right one.
Our own manage with a fraction.
And Morty has only one rug ; )!
MrsLJ, once at the stable, things start rolling on.
In the winter, it takes " some " effort though to get out from the warmish house, honestly said.
Susan T, clean? And I have not yet started with my broom ; )!
J.W., maybe he thinks he is a horse too ; )!
The hay for a small stable like our´s, comes in small 10-15 kg bales.
MrsExeter, for years, we had only classic music on at the stable, but nowadays, the channel- with music, news + sports, for my entertainment. Though I have noticed, that having the radio on, slows up my pace ; ).
Yes, we are eagerly waiting for a fast spring !
Patricia, yes the horses turn alert, when someone approaches the stable ( food? ).
They are quite cooperative with the rugging, Morty as well : ).
Marina, I like the Bucas and the Rambo ( Horseware ) rugs. They are easy to throw on, they stay on their place and protect ( Rambos ) the horse against all weathers.
Darla, we wish to take good care of them.
We had no intention to take a horse boarder; it just happened, two months ago. Mr.B is a very " easy " horse, lacking all bad habits.
Naturally there is a bit ( 1/3 ) more work, but we are used to hard work : ).
Northmoon, I looked up the brand of Morty´s rug= Hurtta.
If you go to their website-
www.hurttacollection.com you are able to see the collection.
Sending abroad- www.hurtta.collections/en/retrailers/distributers-2/
They might send throughout Europe, don´t know about Canada though.
And yes, I like the fact, that the rug covers the chest and the tummy.
Morty has long hair, but it is awfully thin right now.
I have had this one for three years, ca. 60€.
As it is going to be -30°C next week, he might need triples, even for a short peep ; ).
Miss M's horse is a beautiful chestnut colour.
Do your horses' accept a newcomer easily to their stables?
Eeeeck -30 Mette..would take to my bed! The weather forecast predicts snow is on its way here from Siberia..we have the Russians we don't want the snow!! Ida
Ida, yes, like toffee!
I have no idea how to survive through next week. Brrr. Triple rugs and limited hours out for the horses.
Hampel gets shy, if strangers go in his box.
The vet´s arrival makes them nervous too..
Heh, only Morty enjoys the visits to the vet!
Well, f i n a l l y some snow for you too!!!
Is the new house warm? The Siberia coming your way too..
Thank you so much for the dog coat information.
I've found a Canadian supplier and the cost is reasonable. I'm going to call them this week to make sure I'm ordering the right size. Hopefully I'll have a warmer dog very soon.
Very warm underfloor heating..my feet are toasty...the house is also well insulated..downside my skin is suffering the air is so dry.Ida
You forgot to mention that because the horses have thick winter coats of their own, they get warm from riding and need to be dried under infrared heaters before they can be rugged again. At least Miss M's horse gets this treatment :)
Northmoon, great, the original " Hurtta "? What color are you ordering? Morty has size 60 cm, but he is not a big dog ( Boris had 65cm ).
The straps that are slipped through the hind legs might need to be shortened a bit, simple with thread and a needle.
Ida, you lucky girl! We have underfloor heating in the library and downstairs shower room, and it is wonderful to feel the warmth.
M, I completely forgot the infrared heaters, thanks for reminding : ).
That neck cover on the boarder horse looks very comfortable and cozy. I'm not a horse owner, but I am a horse lover. What would happen if you turned then out without the rugs?
So cold and so much work for your 4 legged beauties, just so they can go outside! It is difficult to imagine your chilly conditions when our temperature is hoovering around 33 deg C.
Bon weekend
